Roger, that: At 38, Federer’s brand image remains impeccable as he becomes world’s richest athlete

Image
Roger Federer’s proud record of not forfeiting a tennis match in his epic career seemed to be under threat at Australia Open at the start of this year. A clearly wounded Federer lost to Novak Djokovic 7-6 (7/1), 6-4, 6-3 and admitted later he only had “a 3% chance” to win as he nursed a groin injury picked up in his quarter-final epic against Tennys Sandgren, where he saved seven match points. But only a few days after that, the tennis world was abuzz with the idea of watching Federer and Rafael Nadal in action. Despite injury, he assured fans of his participation in the charity event titled Match in Africa . After all, more than 48,000 tickets were sold in under 10 minutes in September 2019 when bookings were opened. It is just the hold #Fedal have on the tennis community and another surefire sign of Federer’s incredible popularity. The outing with Nadal, Bill Gates and Trevor Noah raised $3.5m for Federer’s eponymous foundation, and the crowd of 51,954 set a new world record for

Justice for George: Schalke’s McKennie wears armband to protest the death of unarmed black man in US

Image
Schalke’s American midfielder Weston McKennie on Saturday wore a ‘Justice for George’ armband as part of the growing protests over the death of an unarmed black man during a police arrest in Minneapolis in the United States. “To be able to use my platform to bring attention to a problem that has been going on too long feels good!!!,” tweeted 21-year-old McKennie after the 1-0 loss to Werder Bremen. “We have to stand up for what we believe in and I believe that it is time that we are heard! #justiceforgeorgefloyd #saynotoracism.” George Floyd died in Minneapolis in an arrest by a police officer who pinned him to the ground for several minutes by kneeling on his neck. Derek Chauvin was charged Friday with one count of third-degree murder – unintentionally causing a death – and one count of negligent manslaughter. McKennie’s USA team-mate Jozy Altidore, who plays for FC Toronto, saluted the Schalke player. “Salute lil bro,” tweeted Altidore. McKennie is the latest American sports

For Mumbai’s security guards, the Covid-19 lockdown has made work both harder and riskier

Image
Before March 24, Satpal Pal’s routine as a building security guard in Mumbai was simple: washing residents’ cars in the morning, keeping track of visitors entering the gate and unwinding at the end of a 12-hours shift in the tiny watchmen’s quarter at the back of the building compound. For this, he has been earning Rs 10,000 a month. After March 24, however, the list of Pal’s duties has grown much longer. “Since the lockdown started, we have to keep the gate closed all the time, make all delivery boys wait outside, give them sanitiser to clean their hands and guard all the delivered packages till the residents come and pick them up,” said Pal, 34, one of three watchman employed at a housing society in Mumbai’s Andheri suburb. “We also have to fumigate the entire compound every evening, which we used to do just once a week before the lockdown.” For all this additional work, Pal has received a one-time bonus of Rs 3,000. The Indian government announced a nationwide lockdown on March

Bundesliga: Lewandowski scores a brace as Bayern Munich drub Dusseldorf to open up 10-point lead

Image
Bayern Munich opened a 10-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga on Saturday with a 5-0 drubbing of relegation-threatened Fortuna Dusseldorf behind closed doors with the league’s top-scorer Robert Lewandowski scoring twice. Duesseldorf defender Mathias Joergensen scored an early own goal before Benjamin Pavard, Lewandowski (2) and Alphonso Davies hit the target. With five games left, Bayern, who have won their last eight league games, are comfortably on course for an eighth straight league title. However, second-placed Borussia Dortmund could trim their lead on Sunday at bottom side Paderborn. Several records fell as Lewandowski now has 43 goals in all competitions, a season’s best for the Poland striker with games in hand. Also head coach Hansi Flick claimed his 22nd win in his first 25 games, bettering the start made by Pep Guardiola when he took charge in 2013. “Statistics and records don’t interest me, what’s important is to have a successful season,” said Flick, in his fir

Watch: Defender Sandesh Jhingan on disappointment of WC qualifiers, Indians playing in Europe & more

Image
Defender Sandesh Jhingan expressed disappointment after missing three matches of 2022 World Cup qualifiers due to his Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury suffered in November but expressed hope for current set of players to leave a mark in India’s football history. India failed to pick up a single win from their five games, registering three draws, but Jhingan said that Igor Stimac’s side can bounce back from what has been an underwhelming qualifying campaign and will get better with time. India lost the opener to Oman at home after a 1-2 defeat before holding Asian champions Qatar 0-0 in Doha to an away draw. But their chances of qualifying for the next round were dented severely after 1-1 draws against Bangladesh and Afghanistan before losing to Oman away 0-1. India’s best case scenario, if and when qualifiers resume, is direct entry into the next edition of AFC Asian Cup. “Of course, I felt bad. Not able to take part on those two games [against Bangladesh and Afghanistan]. I was

Watch: Virat Kohli on MS Dhoni’s role in taking over captaincy, his epic 183 against Pakistan & more

Image
Virat Kohli on Saturday said his elevation to captaincy has a lot to do with keenly observing Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s cricket acumen for many years in an interview with India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on his Instagram Live chat series Reminiscence with Ash. Kohli said he was always keen on taking responsibility and becoming the India captain was a part of that process as he picked Dhoni’s brains on tactical moves. The 31-year-old also spoke about his transition as captain from leading the U-19 side to the senior team, and his highest One-Day International score of 183 that he scored against Pakistan in Dhaka during the 2012 Asia Cup. Excerpts from the chat: On transition as captain from leading India U-19 team to senior team: I was someone who loved taking responsibility. I became captain of the U-19 team in one tour before the World Cup that we won, I wasn’t captain before that. I captained my club team, state team and then Ranji trophy after that with the seniors around.

‘Raya’: This biography of Krishnadevaraya is a love letter to the king from South India

Image
At the pilgrimage site of Tirumala, one of the most-visited holy centres in the world, before one is allowed to have a darshan of Venkateswara, the presiding deity, one is welcomed by bronze images of Krishnadevaraya and his two consorts, Chinna Devi and Tirumala Devi. The not-too-distant Shiva temple at Sri Kalahasthi offers the same experience. Although Krishnadevaraya ruled Vijayanagara for 20 years, between 1509 and 1529, his legacy has over the centuries transcended the human scale, enabling him to acquire semi-divine proportions in the collective memory of Southern India. There are roads, universities, even entire administrative units of states named after the king (why, the University of Wisconsin-Madison has instituted a Krishnadevaraya Chair at the School of Languages and Culture of Asia, currently occupied by Velcheru Narayana Rao). Srinivas Reddy, a scholar and musician, has capitalised on the in-roads made in the last two decades into research on the Deccan by writing wh

SpaceX launches NASA astronauts into orbit from US soil for the first time in nearly a decade

Image
SpaceX , billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s private aerospace manufacturer and space transportation company, on Saturday launched two National Aeronautics and Space Administration astronauts into orbit from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center, AFP reported. This marked the first spaceflight of NASA astronauts from American soil in nine years and the first time in history that a private aerospace firm has carried humans into the Earth’s orbit. A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, with American astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley aboard, lifted off from the launchpad on schedule at 3.22 pm (around 12:52 am Indian Standard Time) for a 19-hour ride as the Crew Dragon capsule slowly maneuvers its way towards the International Space Station. Minutes after the launch, the reusable first-stage booster rocket of the Falcon 9 separated cleanly and landed upright on a floating barge off the Atlantic coast. The second stage also separated smoothly, sending the capsule on its way to the space statio

All musical traditions are unique, and all also evolve constantly. But, whatever culture we may belong to, our experience of music has a point of convergence from the early twentieth century onwards, brought about by the technology of recording, and the creation of the 78 rpm, then the 45 rpm “extended play@, and finally the 33 and 1/3 rpm long playing records. A record is, literally, a “record” of an event, as a chapter in a history is, or an entry in a diary. Among other things, putting a piece of music or a performance “on record” makes retrieval possible – even if it was unheard in its day, we can celebrate it anew, because it irrefutably happened. Retrieval was possible once with compositions but not performances, which vanished with the performer. We don’t know what Tansen’s voice sounded like. A record is also a commodity. In its capacity of being a product, it was always perishable, as products are. It contained within it the possibility of being replaced by another kind of

Trapped between lockdown and mega development plans, India’s fishworkers left to fend for themselves

Image
On April 28, a convoy of 55 buses carrying approximately 4,000 fishermen left from Gujarat’s Veraval harbour on a 50-hour journey to Andhra Pradesh. These fishers had been stranded on their boats for nearly five weeks due to the sudden announcement of the Covid-19 nationwide lockdown from March 25. Unable to earn a living or travel back to their villages, they were living in cramped conditions on their boats with limited access to food and water. It took the deaths of two fishers and the extensive media coverage that followed for the governments of Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh to take action. This was only one of many problems India’s estimated 16 million fishers have had to deal with since the lockdown started. The lockdown effectively paralysed the entire fisheries sector, leaving workers uncertain about how they would earn a living . Fishers who had ventured out to sea before the lockdown returned to discover that they could not land or sell their catches and had to discard tonne

After Centre reopened inter-state travel, coronavirus cases surge across rural India

Image
India’s coronavirus lockdown was set up to be the harshest in the world . It was, for example, the only country that sought to restrict movement and prevent all travel. This sort of draconian lockdown could only have worked if extensive welfare provisions had been made, which would have allowed migrant workers to stay back in big cities even without employment. This did not happen. The situation became so dire that many migrants began to walk, cycle or hitchhike back home, sometimes travelling more than 1,000 km to get home from the cities in which they had been working. On April 29, just over a month into the lockdown, the Union government decided to start running special “Shramik” trains for stranded workers. This meant that workers who had been trapped since March 25 in urban centres, mostly in West and South India, would be able to travel back to their homes, mostly in the East and the North. Through May, Shramik trains transported as many as 50 lakh workers . But – in a sign o

Cricket West Indies agrees to tour England in July with players staying in bio-secure environment

Image
West Indies cricket chiefs on Friday gave their approval to a Test tour of England where the team will stay in a “bio-secure environment.” The Windies were due to play three Tests in England in June but the threat of the coronavirus has pushed the visit back to July at the earliest “The Cricket West Indies board gave approval in principle for the proposed upcoming West Indies Test tour of England,” said a CWI statement. “The decision comes only after CWI medical and cricket-related representatives and advisors have been involved in detailed discussions with the England and Wales Cricket Board, and their own medical and public health advisers.” It added: “CWI has also received and reviewed detailed plans for players and staff to be kept in a bio-secure environment for the duration of the tour, with all matches being played behind closed doors.” The ECB has proposed the Tests will start on July 8, 16 and 24 at Hampshire’s Ageas Bowl and Lancashire’s Old Trafford. 376 burials in 25 days: What explains the surging death rate in Ahmedabad’s burial grounds?

Image
For the past two months, staff at Ahmedabad’s Ganj Shahid Kabrastan for Sunni Muslims have been shocked and overwhelmed by the near-constant stream of funerals at the burial ground every day. There were as many as 199 burials at the large graveyard in April – a number three times higher than the 66 burials that took place in April 2019. The next month, the situation seemed to spin out of control: Ganj Shahid had 376 burials in just the first 25 days of May. In the same month last year, there had been just 61 burials. Is the Covid-19 pandemic the reason behind this surge in deaths in Ahmedabad? The city is Gujarat’s biggest hotspot for the novel coronavirus, with 11,163 cases and 773 deaths reported so far, and a staggering mortality rate of 6.9%. Rizwan Kadri, the head of Ahmedabad’s Sunni Waqf Board which manages the city’s burial grounds, points out that only 147 of the 575 burials at Ganj Shahid in April and May have been confirmed Covid-19 deaths. “But we have been seeing a hu

Coronavirus: Migrants have undergone ‘tremendous suffering’, says Modi in letter to nation

Image
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that migrant workers and labourers have suffered “tremendously” during the coronavirus pandemic and the countrywide lockdown enforced to contain it. In his letter to the nation on completing a year of his second term in office, Modi assured the people that his government is working hard to alleviate the country’s troubles and that India would set an example in economic revival. “In a crisis of this magnitude, it can certainly not be claimed that no one suffered any inconvenience or discomfort,” Modi said. “Our labourers, migrant workers, artisans and craftsmen in small scale industries, hawkers and such fellow countrymen have undergone tremendous suffering. However, we have to take care to ensure that inconveniences that we are facing do not turn into disasters.” Migrant workers were the first in the workforce to be hit by a big economic downturn . European Parliament sub-committee urges India to release Navlakha and Teltumbde immediately

Image
The European Parliament Subcommittee on Human Rights has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressing concern about the recent arrests of activists Anand Teltumbde and Gautam Navlakha by the National Investigative Agency, and urged India to immediately release all political prisoners in view of the coronavirus pandemic. The activists are accused in the Bhima Koregaon case. In the letter, European Union Special Representative for Human Rights Maria Arena said that it was particularly alarming how human rights defenders cannot conduct advocacy activities, especially in favour of India’s poorest and most marginalised communities, without becoming “subject to intimidation and harassment”. The subcommittee also questioned India’s use of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act to portray legitimate peaceful protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and other government laws and policies as “terrorist activities”. This translation of two of Chandrasekhara Kambar’s plays shows why his work is important

Image
Though chronologically his third, Rishyashringa (1970) is Chandrasekhara Kambar’s first major play, while Mahmoud Gawan happens to be his latest. I feel happy that these two important works of Kambar have been ably translated into English by Krishna Manavalli, and published as Two Plays . Kambar published his manifesto-like long poem, Helathena Kela ( Listen, I Will Tell You ) in 1964. His major themes, concerns and motifs are introduced powerfully in this poem. Rooted in his folk tradition and creatively employing the native idiom and storytelling mode, Kambar creates a myth in Helatini Kela , the nuances of which are explored further in many of his future works. This narrative poem is set in the fictional space of Shivapura. Most of Kambar’s works are set in this space. In Helathena Kela , the Gowda, the chieftain of Shivapura village, is killed by a Rakshasa. The Rakshasa (the foreign/Western demon) enters the village from outside in the guise of the Gowda and begins to rule
