May 16 was just another tiring day for migrant workers in the midst of the Covid-19 lockdown. Tired of walking endlessly to reach their villages in Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal, around 50 migrants travelling from Rajasthan had hitched a ride with a goods truck. However, the truck went on to collide with a van in Auraiya district in Uttar Pradesh. The high intensity of the crash caused both the vehicles to overturn, killing at least 24 migrant labourers on board and leaving the others critically injured. This road crash in Auraiya district is one of the numerous mass fatalities to have been reported in the country since a nationwide lockdown was declared in March. On average, every second road crash claimed at least one person’s life during the lockdown – a time when a vast majority of the population was restricted to the confines of their home. In fact, 750 deaths in 1,461 road crashes were recorded across the country, between the months of March and May. It was observed that

8.55 am: The Centre says it does not agree with the figure of Rs 80,000 crore for distributing vaccines, cited by the CEO of the Serum Institute of India, NDTV reports. The institute is the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer and will produce the coronavirus vaccine. “The government has made a National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration and they have held five meetings so far,” Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan says. “In these meetings, we have mulled over the process of COVID-19 vaccine distribution and the amount required for it in terms of prioritisation of population and the staggered immunisation for this prioritisation. In the meetings, we have calculated the amount required and currently, that amount is available with the government.” 8.43 am: US President Donald Trump during the presidential debate with his opponent, former Vice President Joe Biden, continues to claim that a coronavirus vaccine will be available to the public before the presidential election in Novemb

Her family, however, has said they were not allowed to take her body home and were forced to perform the last rites. “It appears that my sister has been cremated; the police are not telling us anything,” the woman’s brother told the newspaper at 3.30 am. “We begged them to let us bring her body inside the house one last time, but they didn’t listen to us.” Four men had raped the woman in Hathras a fortnight ago, causing severe injuries, including multiple fractures. The woman had been initially admitted to the Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College And Hospital at the Aligarh Muslim University, but was moved to the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi on Monday. French Open: Danish teen Tauson downplays Wozniacki comparison after knocking out Brady in opener

Image
Clara Tauson played down the inevitable comparisons to Caroline Wozniacki, her country’s only Grand Slam champion, after becoming just the second Danish woman to reach round two at a major since 1989 on Tuesday. The 17-year-old Tauson knocked out US Open semi-finalist Jennifer Brady in a nail-biting three-set clash on her Grand Slam main draw debut, having come through qualifying in Paris. The former Australian Open junior champion saved two match points before clinching a 6-4, 3-6, 9-7 victory to set up a tie with Danielle Collins for a spot in the last 32. “It’s an insane feeling. I didn’t expect it going into the match. Jen, she was in the semi-finals at the US Open so I was just grateful to be there and play,” said Tauson. “It’s a dream come true,” she added. “Winning the match...I don’t have any words yet. “I’ve never really experienced a match like that because we played long. She had match points, I had match points...I’m really happy.” Since the retirement of Wozniacki a

The book’s dedication to Kathy Acker signals that we’re in baudy and riotously experimental terrain. There’s a manic genius to Nivedita’s prose that pulsates with life and lust, with a few multiple-choice quizzes thrown in, while the lucky reader traverses genres and canons from Pondicherry to Patagonia. Verdict on Babri Masjid demolition today; Advani, MM Joshi, Uma Bharti expected to skip court

Image
A special Central Bureau of Investigation court in Lucknow will pronounce the judgement in the nearly three-decades-old criminal case related to the Babri Masjid demolition on Wednesday. CBI judge Surendra Kumar Yadav is expected to pronounce the verdict at 10 am. The Babri Masjid, located in Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, was demolished by Hindutva extremists on December 6, 1992, because they believed that it stood on land that was the birthplace of deity Ram. Last month, the Supreme Court had set September 30 as the deadline to complete the trial and deliver a verdict. It had directed all 32 accused, including Bharatiya Janata Party leaders Lal Krishna Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharti and Kalyan Singh, to be present in court on the day of the hearing. However, these four leaders will not be present. Advani, who is 92 years old, and the 86-year-old Joshi are exempt due to the coronavirus pandemic , Bharti has contracted Covid-19 and is under treatment, while Singh is recovering

U20 Mayors Summit: Reimagining the city in the age of COVID-19

Image
article author:  Frank Kane Tue, 2020-09-29 22:37 DUBAI: The year 2007 was a momentous one for mankind. That year, according to the United Nations, for the first time in history, more people lived in urban than in rural locations. The concept of the city — which had been inexorably advancing for several thousand years — was finally dominant. The trend towards urbanization began in the Middle East, so it is fitting that over the next three days the region will again be at the center of strategic thinking about the urban phenomenon as it faces perhaps its most serious challenge ever — the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic. In Mathura, the Ayodhya playbook is being deployed again to claim Hindu rights over Idgah mosque

Image
After the Babri Masjid was demolished in Ayodhya in December 1992, Hindutva activists adopted a new slogan: “Ayodhya to sirf jhanki hai, Kashi aur Mathura baaki hai.” Ayodhya is just a teaser. Kashi and Mathura are left. After the Supreme Court in November allowed Hindus to begin constructing a Ram temple on the site on which the Babri Masjid had stood, many feared that this would embolden the calls for similar campaigns against mosques in Kashi and Mathura. Last week, as if on cue, a civil suit was filed in a Mathura court seeking to reclaim a site that was described as the birthplace of Krishna, an incarnation of the god Vishnu. The plaint alleges that the Mughal emperor Aurangazeb destroyed part of the temple that marked the Krishna janmasthan. The Idgah mosque now stands there. It wants the mosque, which stands next to the Krishna Janmasthan temple, to be removed. The suit has been instituted by six devotees led by lawyer Ranjana Agnihotri, who claim to be “friends” of the d
