Ahead of the order, 122 law students from across India have written to Chief Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde and other Supreme Court judges to reconsider the judgement holding Bhushan guilty of contempt for his tweets criticising Bobde and the top court. Bhushan has, despite multiple Supreme Court exhortations, refused to apologise for his remarks. In the letter, the 122 law students made an emotional appeal to Bobde and the other judges, PTI reported. “The judiciary ought to reply for criticism by the restoration of public confidence,” the letter said. “The judiciary ought to reply for criticism by changing its case. ‘The government sabotaged NRC’: All Assam Students’ Union advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya

Image
Assam’s National Register of Citizens, published last August, was updated following a Supreme Court order in 2013. The court’s decision came in response to a petition filed by a non-governmental organisation called Assam Public Works asking for “illegal migrants” to be struck off the electoral rolls. However, the demand to update the 1951 NRC in Assam goes back much further. It was first raised by the most influential of all civil society groups in the state, the All Assam Students’ Union, back in 1980. At the time, the students’ union was spearheading a furious anti-foreigner agitation known as the Assam Movement. The fires of the movement were doused by the signing of the Assam Accord. According to the terms of the accord, those who lived in the state before March 24, 1971, and their descendants could stay in Assam. Those who came after from across the border would be liable to deportation. The cut-off corresponded to the Bangladesh liberation war, which had sparked an exodus from

Of ‘kaamdars’ and ‘naamdars’: Why Modi wants to identify himself with Dhoni’s legacy

Image
Narendra Modi’s cricket acumen maybe untested (although he was once the president of the Gujarat Cricket Association) but his political antennae and communication skills remain razor sharp. Which is why it should come as no surprise that the prime minister chose to recently write a personal letter to former India cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on his retirement that was soon made public through social media. Clearly, Modi was seeking to identify himself with the remarkable legacy of Dhoni, one that is seen to typify the “kaamdar” (workman) versus “naamdar” (dynast) storyline that the prime minister has also sought to consciously embrace. As Modi writes, “You have been one of the important illustrations of the spirit of New India, where family name does not make young people’s destiny but they make their own names and their own destinies.” There is little doubt that Dhoni’s story is one of the more compelling tales of our times. That a boy from the cricketing backwaters of Ranc

Image
article author:  Subhash K Jha Mon, 2020-08-31 01:53 PATNA: Some of Bollywood’s iconic dance scenes may soon become history as India’s new guidelines for the coronavirus-shuttered film industry allow it to reopen under conditions that may completely reshape movie production. The film and television industries were put on hold in late March when a nationwide lockdown was imposed in the wake of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Last week, India’s broadcasting ministry announced that both could resume, but with necessary health protocols in place. Denied permits, Palestinians raze own homes in Jerusalem

Image
article author:  AFP Author:  Mon, 2020-08-31 01:41 JERUSALEM: Palestinian Alaa Borqan preferred to tear down his own house in Israeli-annexed East Jerusalem after a court ruled that it was constructed illegally and must be demolished. The 35-year-old was given two options: To destroy his four-bedroom home in the Jabal Mukaber neighborhood himself, or to let the city council do it and then send him the bill. The Israeli authorities regularly raze homes built by Palestinians on their own lands in East Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank if they lack Israeli construction permits. New tech export controls could give Beijing a say in TikTok sale

Image
article author:  Reuters Author:  Mon, 2020-08-31 01:20 SHANGHAI: China’s new rules around tech exports mean ByteDance’s sale of TikTok’s US operations could need Beijing’s approval, a Chinese trade expert told state media, a requirement that would complicate the forced and politically charged divestment. ByteDance has been ordered by President Donald Trump to divest short video app TikTok in the United States amid security concerns over the personal data it handles. Microsoft Corp. and Oracle Corp. are among the suitors for the assets, which also includes TikTok’s Canada, New Zealand and Australia operations. Nandita Basu’s graphic novel ‘The Piano’ is an unusual story of a woman’s friendship with music

Image
An artisanal piano made in 1912 in Germany travels through time, encountering World War One and the Indian freedom struggle before reaching the home of Meera, a young girl searching for a friend in Calcutta in 1992. “As I was searching for my friend, my friend was searching for me,” Meera observes. That friend turns out to be Marcus Aurelius, the actual 106-year-old German piano belonging to Nandita Basu, which inspired her new graphic novel The Piano . It tracks how Meera, modelled on Basu herself, comes to find Marcus Aurelius as a kid, loses it, and then discovers it again as an adult. Basu is a Gurgaon-based musician and visual artist, who has been producing comics for around 10 years. She has earlier produced short comics for comic book anthologies, drawn and written a syndicated comic series for the Tamil newspaper Dinamalar , and self-published an autobiographical graphic novel, A Comic Existense . The Piano is Basu’s first graphic novel formally published by a leading pub

Ramachandra Guha: Amidst the anxiety of the Covid-19 pandemic, the comfort of cricket

Image
When the pandemic began gathering pace in April, there were fears that this would be the first summer in England since the end of the Second World War in which no cricket would be played. Fortunately, it has turned out otherwise. Conditions improved enough for there to be six Test matches, three against the West Indies and three against Pakistan, played in oddly empty stadiums but telecast live around the world. With millions of other cricket fans, I partook of an intense spell of binge-watching in this time of panic and suffering, seeking refuge and consolation in my favourite sport. Although in the end, England won both series comfortably, the matches were not without competitive interest. And the summer ended, cricketing-wise, on the happiest of notes, with the great Jimmy Anderson getting his six hundredth Test wicket, the first new-ball bowler to join a club hitherto reserved for spinners alone. Among the joys of following Test cricket in England is that one can do so without g
